Physiological Signs of Burnout and Their Downstream Effects

Olivia and I discuss what happens when cortisol flatlines.

Last week, we discussed what happens when cortisol levels are out of whack in the body. Common side effects include increased stress, anxiety, higher blood pressure, and heart rate.

But what’s the flip side?

When cortisol flatlines and doesn’t follow its usual circadian rhythm, it can lead to burnout.

Burnout manifests in the form of low energy, lack of emotion, intense fatigue, and even chronic pain.

These physiological symptoms can be ways of reading your body to decide when to take a break, or, at the very least, for some overachievers, find time to scale back and take a deep breath.

Olivia mentions that getting tested via lab work (ideally a saliva test) can show where cortisol is and quantify just how burned out you are.

Speaking of lab tests…
